Driving lessons Branksome, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Branksome, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Branksome.
If you are taking your driving lessons in and around Branksome you will need to deal with the Branksome double roundabouts, pictured here. Key skills that would apply here would be, good forward planning, a good understanding of lane systems, and good lane discipline. If you know the area, I will help you get orientated with the image. The road to the Left would lead to Westbourne, The road at the top leads to lower Parkstone, To the right is upper Parkstone, bottom right is Alder hills, and bottom left is the retail park. Now we have our bearings let me explain the lanes when taking the more complex route around these two roundabouts. When coming from Alder hills (bottom right) and going to Lower Parkstone (top), you will see as you approach the first of the 2 roundabouts the is a left arrow in both lanes, as you will be turning right at the second of the 2 roundabouts you would take up the right of these 2 lanes. It is a slightly strange feeling turning left from a right hand lane, but this is done so you can follow immediately into the right hand lane as you leave the roundabout, so your ready for the second roundabout, without having to do a lane change. I would also suggest you make a left signal to make this turn but don’t leave it on very long so other traffic does not think you are going to the left lane. You will then be already in the right hand lane for the second roundabout so this can be taken almost like you would take a normal right turn at a roundabout. However you may notice that as you are coming around this roundabout towards the lower Parkstone exit, The lane will gradually move you to the left as you pass the first exit, it has been designed this way to avoid the roundabout getting blocked at busy times. Also note that there is a pedestrian crossing just as you leave the roundabout, check this is clear as early as possible.

Driving lessons Parkstone, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Parkstone, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing when driving through the busy Ashley road in upper Parkstone.
If you are taking your driving lessons in and around the Parkstone area, you will definitely have to drive along the busy Ashley road, pictured here. On these types of road you will come across a lot of hazards, these would be anything that would make you slow down or change direction. These hazards are split into 2 categories, potential hazards, this would be something that might make you slow down eg. a pedestrian looking like they might cross the road but still currently on the pavement. When you have a potential hazard you should prepare to stop, preparing to stop would mean you check your centre mirror and cover your brake pedal, with practise this should build up to being an automatic response whenever a potential hazard is seen. Then you have developing hazards, these would be anything that will make you slow down eg. our pedestrian now steps into the road. When the hazard develops you should start to brake. When you are driving along these roads you may have a hazard to deal with every couple of seconds so you will need to be very alert and and quick with your observation. Never let one thing take all of your attention, this means as soon as you have identified a potential hazard you can prepare to stop and keep the hazard in your peripheral vision but be looking for the next hazard. The traffic queue’s on these roads can get very built up, as pictured. When in these queue’s it is a good idea to keep a good distance from the car in front, I feel about 4 or 5 car lengths while traffic is moving. There are a lot of good reasons behind this, firstly it improves traffic flow, most traffic queue’s will start and stop repeatedly, this is mainly due to traffic following very closely to the vehicle in front and having to stop quickly when the queue stops. When following at a larger distance from the car in front, you can slow down gradually when the traffic in front is stopped and this often allows you to keep moving slowly as the traffic in front moves away again, keeping traffic flow going. It will also allow you to watch for side roads, keep clear signs, pedestrian crossings, and box junctions, all things that you should keep clear when stopping in traffic unlike the vehicles that are blocking the side road in this image.

Driving lessons Canford Heath, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Canford Heath, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Canford Heath.
This aerial image of the “derby’s corner roundabout” near canford heath shows that it is not laid out like a regular roundabout. two sides have two lanes around the roundabout and the other two have three lanes. Where there are two lanes normal roundabout rules apply so I’m not going to talk about these here. Where there are three lanes spiral roundabout rules apply. This means that if you are turning right you approach the roundabout in the right hand lane signalling right, as you pass the first exit on the roundabout you check your mirrors and move to the centre lane still signalling right and as you pass the second exit you check your mirrors signal left and move to the left hand lane

Driving lessons Hamworthy, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Hamworthy, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with the lifting bridge in Hamworthy.
This is the Hamworthy lifting bridge. This is not something drivers will come across very frequently so many aren’t too sure how to deal with it. The very first thing I would like to mention is if you know you have a route that will be taking you across this bridge, check the lifting times before you leave, I won’t list them all here but generally on the half hour (at the moment). There are also signs on roads that lead to the bridge warning you if the bridge is up check these and if you know the bridge will be up, go another way. If you are approaching the bridge and the amber warning light comes on, stop if it is safe to do so. If the red lights are on you should see these from far back so it will be safe to stop you do this behind the white line before the box junction. It is also very thin going across the bridge and you must make sure the larger oncoming vehicles are leaving you enough space. If in doubt wait for the larger vehicles to come the other way before entering the bridge. If you do wait make sure it is behind the box junction. I will however also mention some pupils will tend to be a little over cautious and wait when there is enough space, if it does make you a little nervous my main piece of advice would be focus on the gap, when you are crossing the bridge be aware of but don’t look at the vehicles on the other side and focus on how much space you have on your side. This may all be irrelevant soon as the council are building a new bridge and this one may be virtually unused, but I have no doubt they will do it in there usual double quick time of about 10 years so this may be useful for a little longer yet.

Driving lessons Canford Cliffs, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Canford Cliffs, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Canford Cliffs.
This aerial image shows a cross roads onto the main Canford Cliffs high street where you have restricted view. Your view is restricted due to the bend in the road across the junction. You must take great care on this type of junction to have the car slow enough as you arrive at the junction, possibly even stopped, so you have time to see as far down the road as possible before making your decision. Use reflections in shop windows opposite to allow you to gain a further view down the major road and if absolutely necessary use peep and creep technique to ensure the road is clear, although this is usually used for occasions where your view is restricted by parked cars.

Driving lessons Oakdale, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Oakdale, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Oakdale.
Joining the Dorset way at the Oakdale junction has often caused problems for many drivers. This appears to be because there is a sharp bend before joining the slip road so no time to build up speed, after the bend there you would be directly next to the dual carriageway (with no barriers or chevrons) so people try to join the carriageway immediately without having sufficient speed. There is a simple solution to ensure you can do this safely. Although the slip road is thin, it is however really long, so long in fact I could not fit the whole thing on this image without losing image clarity. So after taking the bend, stay left and build your speed on the very long slip road this will allow you ample time to assess your mirrors and safely select an opportunity to signal and move onto the carriageway.

Driving lessons Lilliput, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Lilliput, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Lilliput, Poole.
This junction in Lilliput see’s two minor roads joining the major road very close together. When travelling down the major road and turning left into the second of the 2 roads you should make a very early centre and left mirror check, be very aware of what traffic is behind you, as you will need to slow down before making a left signal, if there is traffic behind you slow very early and check on the following traffic a couple more times to ensure they are keeping a safe distance, just as you pass the first of the two roads you can then apply your left signal. It is done this late to ensure any traffic emerging from this road does not think you are turning and pull out in front of you. If you are emerging from either of the minor roads take extra caution to ensure no one is giving you a misleading signal and check on any traffic emerging from the other minor road.

Driving lessons Upton, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Upton, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Upton.
The infamous double roundabouts at Upton have puzzled many experienced drivers as well as learners. On approaching where there are 3 lanes it is quite straight forward, left lane for left, middle for straight and right for right. The difficulty comes when you approach the roundabouts where there are 2 lanes, which lane should you select to go straight ahead? Normal roundabout rules would suggest that if the exits are exactly ahead of you (positioned at 12o’clock) you would use the left hand lane. These exit’s may be considered slightly passed 12o’clock and also the 3 lanes across the centre of the roundabout confuse people, so many drivers take different lanes to go ahead. So what to do to be safe? As you approach check the car behind you in your mirrors, if they are signalling left select the left lane so they can’t pass you then the centre lane as you go across the centre of the 2 roundabouts. If the car behind is signalling right on approach select the right lane so they again won’t come alongside you then the right lane as you cross the centre of the 2 roundabouts. If the car behind you is not signalling, select the right lane then to the right lane as you cross the centre of the 2 roundabouts before leaving the second roundabouts check your left hand side and mirrors to ensure the vehicle has not come alongside you to take the same exit as you, if they have you have the escape route of continuing around the second roundabout. Also note that as you come off any exit you will come across a pedestrian crossing so look up as your leaving the roundabout to ensure they are clear.

Driving lessons Corfe Mullen, Poole
Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Corfe Mullen, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Corfe Mullen.
When approaching this mini roundabout from Springdale road (pictured bottom) turning into Wareham road (pictured left to right) you will have a very restricted view. Take this slowly, you can see pictured that there are parked cars and shops opposite, use the windows on these cars and shops to look for reflections of vehicles approaching from the right you may not see, if you are still unsure that your way is clear you can slowly creep over the line until you have a convincing view down the road to your right.
