Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Westbourne, Bournemouth for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Westbourne.

When dealing with this junction, known as the Liverpool Victoria one way system. Firstly use signs and markings to select your lane early on approach, look well down the road for where your lane leads and stay as central in it as possible. Do not change your lane, even if you find yourself in the wrong one, unless you have thoroughly checked your mirrors and signalled. Beware when heading from the Wessex way towards Poole, the Poole markings will place you in the left lane then move you across traffic to the centre lane half way around the system. You would be best to stay in the centre lane to start with but be aware of other traffic cutting across from your left.

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Wallisdown, Bournemouth for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult roundabouts in Wallisdown.

This is an aerial image of the Mountbatton roundabout near Wallisdown. As you can see this is a complex roundabout with many lanes. I would like to start by explaining this should be treated like a one way system, not a roundabout, normal roundabout rules don’t apply here (for those in the know it could be treated like a spiral roundabout but I find one way rules are easier to follow here). When treating it like a one way system you should use the signs and markings to identify your destination and make an early lane selection. Look well ahead for where your lane leads and make sure you follow in the centre of your lane. On this junction you should also beware the box junctions, the rules for these box junctions are do not enter unless your path out is clear and on this junction it often isn’t. The most difficult route around this is turning right from Wallisdown Road (pictured bottom) into Ringwood road (pictured right), as you approach the right hand lane has a straight ahead arrow, not a right arrow like normal roundabouts (a sure fire way to tell you should treat it like a one way system). Select this lane and as you move into the roundabout all the traffic to your left will leave at the first exit, so you can then move to the left lane providing it is clear. As you follow further around the roundabout the lanes cross with those of the traffic entering from the left, this has caused many a driver to cut across to the middle lane. The way to avoid this lane cross over distracting you is to focus on the kerb rather than watching the lanes (through my tuition this is the only occasion I’ve told pupils not to focus on where the lane leads). You can then keep the car next to the kerb passed the second exit and follow all the way around to the third.

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Upton, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Upton.

The infamous double roundabouts at Upton have puzzled many experienced drivers as well as learners. On approaching where there are 3 lanes it is quite straight forward, left lane for left, middle for straight and right for right. The difficulty comes when you approach the roundabouts where there are 2 lanes, which lane should you select to go straight ahead? Normal roundabout rules would suggest that if the exits are exactly ahead of you (positioned at 12o’clock) you would use the left hand lane. These exit’s may be considered slightly passed 12o’clock and also the 3 lanes across the centre of the roundabout confuse people, so many drivers take different lanes to go ahead. So what to do to be safe? As you approach check the car behind you in your mirrors, if they are signalling left select the left lane so they can’t pass you then the centre lane as you go across the centre of the 2 roundabouts. If the car behind is signalling right on approach select the right lane so they again won’t come alongside you then the right lane as you cross the centre of the 2 roundabouts. If the car behind you is not signalling, select the right lane then to the right lane as you cross the centre of the 2 roundabouts before leaving the second roundabouts check your left hand side and mirrors to ensure the vehicle has not come alongside you to take the same exit as you, if they have you have the escape route of continuing around the second roundabout. Also note that as you come off any exit you will come across a pedestrian crossing so look up as your leaving the roundabout to ensure they are clear.

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Corfe Mullen, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of the most difficult junctions in Corfe Mullen.

When approaching this mini roundabout from Springdale road (pictured bottom) turning into Wareham road (pictured left to right) you will have a very restricted view. Take this slowly, you can see pictured that there are parked cars and shops opposite, use the windows on these cars and shops to look for reflections of vehicles approaching from the right you may not see, if you are still unsure that your way is clear you can slowly creep over the line until you have a convincing view down the road to your right.
